Yuji: Oh yes. As it's getting warmer day by day, I feel excited.
Because I can do the farmwork as much as I can. The soil
becomes dry,
and it's easy to cultivate.
Every plant is going to grow now. Yesterday I sowed the seeds of
carrots, turnip, radish and cabbage. I'm looking forward to
the crop in early summer.
Takeshi: I understand that's why you look so lively. By the way, don't you
grow rice?
Yuji: Of course I do. In the middle of May, about a month later, I'm
going to transplant rice seedlings in the paddy fields.
But I can't do in all the fields which I own.
Takeshi: Why can't you?
Yuji: Haven't you heard the word, "Gentan"?
Takeshi: "Gentan?" What's that?
Yuji: If we farmers raise rice all the fields in Japan, we can get
much rice more than
we comsume and it is left over.
We are not allowed to crop fields with rice as we like.
But the government is continuing to import rice from
foreign countries every year.
Takeshi: I wonder why our country needs to buy rice from other
countries.
Yuji: I don't know exactly. But there must be some complicated
circumstances behind the matter, I suppose.
雄二： 大いにあるよ。日に日に暖かくなってくるとうきうきしてくるんだ。
というのもね、思いっ切り百姓仕事ができるからなんだよ。
土は乾いて耕しやすくなるし、植物は成長し始めるんだよ。昨日は、ニンジン、カブ、大根、
キャベツの種まきをしたんだ。夏の収穫が待ち遠しいよ。
武司： それで君が生き生きしているのがわかったよ。ところで、米は作らないの？
雄二： もちろん作るよ。一月ほど後の、５月中旬に田植えをするんだ。でも、うちの田んぼ全部
では米を作れないんだ。
武司： どうして？
雄二： 「減反」という言葉を聞いたことがないかい。
武司： 「減反？」なんだいそれは
雄二： もしもね、日本中で誰もが米を作れば、我々の消費する量よりも多く獲れすぎて、米が
余ってしまうんだ。僕たちは、自由に米を作れないんだよ。でも、政府は外国から米を
輸入し
続けているんだ。
武司： なぜ他の国から米を買う必要があるの。
武司： 詳しくは知らない。でもそれには複雑な事情があるんだろう。
